Backflow prevention and thermostatic mixing valve testing

The test is annual, it is a legal requirement, and the reminder never arrives at a good time. Backflow valves stop contaminated water flowing back into the drinking supply. Thermostatic mixing valves blend hot and cold to a safe temperature so nobody gets scalded. Both need testing, and we test and repair on the spot.

What a backflow device does

Backflow prevention devices are critical parts of any plumbing system: they stop contaminated water flowing back into the clean, drinking water supply. We will let you use your imagination as to exactly what contaminated might contain. In any event, it is not good.

They are mechanical, they sit in a wet environment, and they fail quietly. That is why testing is on a cycle rather than on a complaint: by the time anyone notices, the thing the device was there to prevent has already happened.

What a thermostatic mixing valve does

Thermostatic mixing valves blend hot and cold water to a safe temperature to prevent scalds. They also shut off rapidly if the hot or cold supply fails, which prevents scalding or thermal shock. They are both a safety device and an energy saving one, because they hold a constant temperature.

When a TMV fails, it fails towards a temperature nobody chose. In a childcare centre, an aged care facility, a medical practice or a public washroom that is not a maintenance issue, it is an injury waiting to be reported.

How we run the test

We test the devices, and if we find a fault we fix it on the same visit rather than booking a second one. You get the report for your records at the end.

That last part matters more than it sounds. The reason most sites fail an audit is not that the devices are bad, it is that nobody can produce the paperwork showing they were tested. Keep the reports somewhere findable.

Who this is for

Commercial and industrial sites, pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants, commercial kitchens, medical and dental rooms, childcare and aged care, schools, and body corporates with common facilities. Most of that work sits in Rockhampton, because that is the region's commercial centre, but there is plenty of it along the coast and on the Yaamba Road corridor at Parkhurst as well.

How often does a backflow device need testing?

Testable backflow prevention devices are on an annual cycle, and the responsibility for having it done sits with the property owner or occupier rather than with the water authority. Ring us and tell us what devices are on site and when they were last done, and we will tell you where you stand.

What happens if we have never had it done?

Then the sensible first step is to find out what is actually installed, because a lot of sites have devices nobody has a record of. We can test what is there, tell you what condition it is in, and give you a report that starts the paper trail properly.

Do you fix a failed device or just report it?

We fix it on the spot where we can. Booking a second visit to repair something we have just found is a waste of your money and our time.

Can you do the testing outside trading hours?

Ring us and ask, and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot do. What we will not do is promise you a time on a web page that we might not be able to keep.

Blocked drains and maintenance
