That is the whole of it, and we are deliberately not dressing it up. We do not guarantee a slot and we do not put a response time on a web page. Plenty of plumbers do both. The honest version is that we will tell you on the phone what we can actually do, and then we will do that.

Turn it off first, then ring

The single most useful thing you can do before we arrive is stop the water. Find your water meter, usually at the front boundary, and turn the tap beside it clockwise until it stops. If you have never done it, it is worth finding out where yours is on a day when nothing is wrong.

For a burst pipe: water off at the main, ring us, then contact your home insurer. For a suspected gas leak: appliances off, doors and windows open, gas off at the main valve, then ring us from outside. For a blocked drain: try a plunger, and if that does not shift it, ring us.

What counts as an emergency

Water you cannot stop. A burst or leaking water main. Sewage backing up into the house. No hot water in the middle of winter with kids in the house. A gas smell you cannot explain. A storm that has put water somewhere it should not be.

What is usually not an emergency, and will cost you less if you book it normally: a dripping tap, a slow drain that still drains, a running toilet, and anything you have been living with for a fortnight.

Storm season on the Capricorn Coast

Between November and April, a lot of what we get called to is not a broken pipe at all, it is water that has nowhere to go. On the cut-and-fill blocks at Taranganba the ground can fall back towards the house. Down at Mulambin and Keppel Sands there is barely any fall to work with on a high tide. In the low-lying Rockhampton suburbs the stormwater is often still carrying silt from the last flood.

Most of that is far cheaper to deal with in September than in February. If your yard held water last wet season, that is worth a look now.

When can you actually come out?

Our local emergency team is ready to respond promptly during all active business hours. That is the offer, stated exactly. We have not put a guaranteed response time on this page because we have not promised one. Ring us and we will tell you straight what we can do and when, rather than taking the job and leaving you waiting.

Where is my water main and how do I turn it off?

It is normally at the front boundary of the property, in a small box in the ground with the water meter in it. There is a tap beside the meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Worth locating it now rather than in the dark with water rising.

I think I can smell gas. Should I ring you from inside?

No. Turn off any appliances, open the doors and windows, shut the gas off at the main valve, and then ring from outside the area. Do not use a light switch or anything else that could spark in the room.

Should I ring my insurer first or the plumber first?

Stop the water first, then ring us, then ring the insurer. Insurers generally want the damage stopped and documented, and they will want to know what a plumber has said. Take photos before anything gets cleaned up.

Blocked drains and maintenance

Water coming back up through the plugholes, and the plunger has given up. Blocked dunnies, leaking taps, corroded pipework and water pressure that is either a dribble or a rumble. This is the bread and butter service call.

Gas installation and gas fitting

Make sure you are (safely) cooking with gas. Gas is the licensed, higher risk work a handyman cannot legally touch. Hot water systems, stovetops and ovens are the speciality, domestic and commercial, including commercial kitchens.

Backflow and TMV testing

The test is annual, and the reminder never comes at a good time. Backflow valves stop contaminated water flowing back into the drinking supply. Thermostatic mixing valves blend hot and cold to a safe temperature so nobody gets scalded. Both need testing, and we test and repair on the spot.
