Servicing Yeppoon, Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast
Hot water repairs and installation
You turn on the tap and wait for it to warm up. And wait. And wait, for hot water that never comes. We install energy efficient hot water systems and troubleshoot the one you already have. Instantaneous gas, solar and heat pump, plus repairs on whatever is out there now.
- We turn up on time.
- We do the job well (and clean up afterwards).
- We talk to you (and have a laugh).
First, the thirty second diagnosis
Before you ring anyone, check whether there is hot water anywhere else in the house. If there is none at any tap, it is the hot water unit itself. If there is hot water somewhere but not everywhere, that points to a burst or a leaking pipe rather than the unit.
That one check tells us what to bring, and it is the difference between one visit and two. When you ring, tell us what you found, plus the make of the unit and roughly how old it is if you know.
Why hot water systems die faster on this coast
On the Capricorn Coast the air carries salt, and salt attacks a hot water unit from the outside in. The casing goes, the fittings pit, and the pressure and temperature relief valve stops seating properly, all while the tank inside is still perfectly sound. That is why the first warning here is usually a relief valve that weeps constantly, not a cold shower.
Inland at Rockhampton the enemy is heat instead. A unit sitting in full afternoon sun on a west wall through a run of high-thirties days works its seals and its valve much harder than the same unit in shade. Where an outdoor unit goes is worth thirty seconds of thought at install time.
On a storage system there is also a sacrificial anode inside, designed to be eaten so that the tank is not. Checking it before it is gone can add years. Checking it after it is gone tells you what you already know.
Choosing what replaces it
We install three types and the right answer depends on the household, not on what is in stock.
- Instantaneous gasHeats only the water you use rather than reheating a tank several times a day. Cheaper to run than a traditional tank, and it does not run out. Needs gas, so on the coast that usually means LPG.
- SolarPanels heat water held in a tank. The lowest running cost of the three in this climate, and Central Queensland has the sun for it. Higher up-front cost and it needs roof space facing the right way.
- Heat pumpAbsorbs heat from the air through an evaporator and moves it into the water through a heat exchanger. No gas needed and no roof panels, so it suits a house that cannot take either.
We will ask what the household actually uses before recommending anything, because the biggest saving is usually in matching the system to the demand rather than in the brand on the front.
What we repair
Not everything needs replacing. Relief valves, tempering valves, elements, thermostats, anodes and isolating valves are all serviceable parts, and on a unit that is not yet at the end of its life the repair is the sensible call. On a unit that is, we will tell you that too.

What customers actually said
Jason made himself available to help us out in a pinch. Twice!Highly recommend Flowtek for both plumbing and gas works
Found a leak and called Flowtek who booked me in the next working day. Issue was resolved quickly and for a reasonable price. Will use again. Thanks guys!
These are customers' own words about their own jobs, published on our Google Business Profile and quoted here exactly as they wrote them, misspellings of our name included. They describe what happened on those days. They are not a promise about how quickly we can get to you.
Hot water questions we get asked
My relief valve is dripping constantly. Is that normal?
A small discharge while the system heats is normal. Constant dripping is not, and it is the most common early warning we see on this coast. It usually means the valve is no longer seating, which wastes water continuously and means the valve may not release when it actually needs to. It is a cheap part and it should be dealt with rather than watched.
How long should a hot water system last?
It depends on the type, the water and where it sits. What we can say honestly is that a unit on the Capricorn Coast lives a harder life than the same unit inland, and one in full afternoon sun in Rockhampton lives a harder life again. Rather than guess a number, ring us and tell us the make and the age and we will tell you whether it is worth servicing or planning to replace.
Can I switch from electric storage to instantaneous gas?
Usually yes, and it is one of the more common jobs we do. It is not a like-for-like swap though: it needs a gas supply, a compliant flue position and often different pipework. That is licensed gas work, which is why it is worth having the one trade do both sides of it.
Do you work on solar hot water?
Yes, both installation and the plumbing side of repairs. If a solar system has stopped performing, the fault is often in the valves or the circulation rather than the panels, and that is worth checking before anyone talks about replacing the collectors.

While we are there
We are licensed for water and for gas, so if something else is playing up while we are on site, say so on the form. It saves you a second call out.

Blocked drains and maintenance
Water coming back up through the plugholes, and the plunger has given up. Blocked dunnies, leaking taps, corroded pipework and water pressure that is either a dribble or a rumble. This is the bread and butter service call.

Bathroom and kitchen renovations
Creating your dream bathroom, kitchen or laundry? The plumbing you cannot see is the part that ruins a renovation. We cover the water and the gas on the same job, so a kitchen with a gas cooktop takes one trade instead of two.
Renovations
Gas installation and gas fitting
Make sure you are (safely) cooking with gas. Gas is the licensed, higher risk work a handyman cannot legally touch. Hot water systems, stovetops and ovens are the speciality, domestic and commercial, including commercial kitchens.

Backflow and TMV testing
The test is annual, and the reminder never comes at a good time. Backflow valves stop contaminated water flowing back into the drinking supply. Thermostatic mixing valves blend hot and cold to a safe temperature so nobody gets scalded. Both need testing, and we test and repair on the spot.
