Why does my hot water system fail faster in Yeppoon than it did inland?

Salt. An outdoor unit on the Capricorn Coast lives in salt-laden air all year, and that attacks the casing, the fittings and the relief valve well before the tank itself gives up. Rinsing the outside of the unit with fresh water now and then genuinely helps, and so does replacing the sacrificial anode on a storage system before it is gone rather than after.

What we know about the pipes in Yeppoon

Yeppoon housing splits into three lots, and each one breaks differently. The older fibro and lowset brick near the Esplanade and the town centre is where we find perished tap spindles and copper that has been repaired more than once. The 1990s and 2000s brick and tile up the hill is now old enough that the first hot water system is at the end of its life, and a lot of them are still the original electric storage unit. Then there are the new estates, where the plumbing is fine and the calls are gas points, second bathrooms and hot water upgrades. The thing that ties all three together is salt. Living this close to the water means the air carries salt inland, and it eats the casing of an outdoor hot water unit, the relief valve seat and any exposed copper far faster than it would 40 km inland at Rockhampton.

What we get called out for most in Yeppoon

Hot water. Between the salt on the outdoor units and the age of the 1990s and 2000s housing stock, a lot of Yeppoon is running a storage system that is past its design life. The second most common is stormwater, and it clusters hard in the wet season between November and April.
