It depends what is either side of it. If the failed joint is one of several improvised connections in mixed materials, patching it just moves the next failure along. If the rest of the run is sound and consistent, patching is the sensible call. Does the good access make it cheaper?

What we know about the pipes in Berserker
Berserker is a high-set timber suburb, and that is genuinely good news for a plumber and for the person paying. A lot of the housing here is 1950s to 1970s Queensland-style homes up on stumps, which means the water lines and much of the waste run underneath in the open where you can see them. Compared with chasing a leak inside a slab, working under a Berserker house is quick, and a repair that would be a demolition job elsewhere is often an hour with a torch. The catch is what all that easy access has encouraged over seventy years. Under a house of this age we routinely find three or four generations of pipework spliced together, jointed with whatever was on the truck at the time, and supported by whatever was handy. It works until one joint lets go, and then the question is whether to patch the joint or rationalise the run. On the sewer side the age is the same as Park Avenue, so roots in older lines come up here too.
