Wandal is one of Rockhampton's oldest suburbs, west of the centre near the showgrounds. We are a licensed plumber and gas fitter based in Yeppoon, covering the water and the gas from the one trade.
Wandal is old Rockhampton, and the housing shows it: pre-war and interwar Queenslanders on stumps, with post-war infill filling the gaps. That age puts it firmly in clay sewer and galvanised territory, and it puts the water lines under the house where you can get at them. The Wandal-specific thing is the combination of great access and terrible pipe. Under a Queenslander on stumps you can walk to almost any water line in the house, which makes the repair itself fast. But on a house that old the water line you have walked to is often galvanised that has narrowed from the inside, or copper that has already been spliced twice, so the repair you came to do is rarely the whole job. Wandal is also close to the river and low compared with The Range above it, so the flood history that runs through the old parts of Rockhampton runs through here, and silt in stormwater lines is a thing worth checking after a wet season rather than a thing to wait on.

The test is annual, and the reminder never comes at a good time. Backflow valves stop contaminated water flowing back into the drinking supply. Thermostatic mixing valves blend hot and cold to a safe temperature so nobody gets scalded. Both need testing, and we test and repair on the spot.

I had a plumbing emergency where an underground pipe burst flooding my house. Jason from Flowtek plumbing services attended within 10 minutes and closed off the system. He diagnosed to problem, located the source of the leak through a heat detection instrument and came up with a transparent plan to fix.Jason and his team commenced a dig within the existing kitchen corner cupboard space, very awkward and through concrete where the pipe was located a deep (about 18 inches deep).The pipe was fixed in situ and back to working order. That is the signature of galvanised pipe, and Wandal has plenty of it. Galvanised corrodes inwards, so the bore narrows year by year and the pressure falls with it, often with rusty water first thing in the morning. It does not announce itself with a burst. Once it is at that stage, replacing the run is the only fix that lasts.
